Reading together is GREAT! Selections for ages 5 & up

Ok, I'm trying this again. I started this post earlier today - thought I saved it - and when I came back it had vanished! Frustrating, but I'm going again.

While I completely adore the Barefoot Books selections for the smallest children the options for the older kids are truly my favorite. The first thing that attracted me to these products from the beginning was the focus on other cultures, and the amazing artwork. As a result of the Barefoot story collections from around the world my kids have a connection to other cultures and ways of life that I could never have imagined. They are not all folk tales though - there are so many options! So let's jump in OR Click here to begin shopping.

The Barefoot Book of Pirates

Set sail with seven piratical tales brimming with adventure in this collection drawn from sources around the world. From mysterious and spooky to friendly and funny, the tales emphasize the qualities of bravery, imagination and compassion. Book with CD editions include stories read by Richard Hope.

One City, Two Brothers

Listen to Solomon as he tells the story of two brothers who learn the true meaning of peace and selflessness in this traditional tale that has been shared for hundreds of years in mosques, synagogues, and churches across the Near East and beyond.

The Boy Who Grew Flowers

Climb to the top of Lonesome Mountain to meet a very special boy named Rink — every full moon, he grows flowers all over his body. This heartwarming story celebrates difference and friendship, as Rink meets a girl with her own secret, and they discover ways to help each other.

The Faerie's Gift

Enter a magical forest where a woodcutter is granted one wish after saving the life of a fairy. The woodcutter must make a difficult decision when faced with the needs of his wife, his father, and his mother. His ingenious and touching choice is at the heart of this traditional tale. Book with CD edition includes story read by actress Niamh Cusack.

The Barefoot Book of Earth Tales

Learn how different cultures around the world set out to live in harmony with the natural world. The seven folk tales are each followed by a hands-on activity that promotes green living and reinforces the eco-messages of the stories.

Emily's Tiger

Watch out - Emily is off and running again! This little girl has a problem with her temper, and every time she gets angry she turns into quite the little tiger. This quirky picture book addresses behavioral issues with humor and an emphasis on intergenerational relationships.

Lin Yi's Lantern

A Moon Festival Tale

Meet Lin Yi — a little boy with a big heart and a talent for bargaining. Tonight is the moon festival and he wants nothing more than a red rabbit lantern; but first he must buy the things his mother needs at the market. This heartwarming story shows the rewards of putting others first, and includes educational notes at the end about the Chinese moon festival, life in rural China, and the legend of the moon fairy.
